Mi nombre es Andrea Palafox López, soy originaria de Guanajuato, Gto, México, y tengo 28 años. He practicado varios deportes y actividades físicas desde pequeña, tuve la fortuna de tener una niñez con mucho dinamismo y alrededor de los 15 años empecé a focalizar mis habilidades en el tiro, la danza y el atletismo. Sin saberlo, le estaba dando forma a mi futuro; esas actividades me han llevado a grandes viajes, aprendizajes y aventuras que nunca imaginé.

My name is Andrea Palafox López, I am originally from Guanajuato, Gto, Mexico, and I am 28 years old. I have practiced several sports and physical activities since I was a child, I had the fortune of having a very dynamic childhood and around the age of 15 I started focusing my skills in shooting, dance and athletics. Without knowing it, I was shaping my future; those activities have led me to great journeys, learnings and adventures that I never imagined.

Dichas actividades se introdujeron a mi vida de maneras diferentes y casi inesperadas, todas han creado un impacto en mi vida para convertirme en la persona que soy ahora, sin embargo el tiro ha sido la más significativa hasta ahora. Desde muy pequeña cada dos años durante el verano o invierno veía los juegos olímpicos con mi papá, a él le emocionaba particularmente el atletismo así que yo fui adquiriendo admiración y gusto por éste deporte, pero nunca me imaginé que eso que yo admiraba tanto se convertiría en el móvil de mi vida.

These activities were introduced to my life in different and almost unexpected ways, all have created an impact on my life to become the person I am now, however rifle has been the most significant so far. Since very early age, every two years during the summer or winter, I saw the Olympic games with my dad. He was particularly excited about the athletics, so I was gaining admiration and taste for this sport, but I never imagined that what I would like it so much that it would become in the force of my life.

El deporte me ha enseñado a ganar y a perder, pero sobre todo a recuperarme. Una de las cosas más importantes que aprendí a lo largo de mi vida como deportista fue la disciplina, aun no he descifrado y creo que nunca lo haré, si ya era así o fue el deporte lo que me hizo una persona que lucha por sus objetivos, ordenada, metódica, y positiva. Gracias a mi dedicación y a la disciplina que gira en torno al deporte, he logrado muchas cosas. Además de ganar competencias y romper records, tengo una carrera como psicóloga, estoy por terminar mi maestría en psicología deportiva, estoy emprendiendo mi propio negocio, soy corredora amateur y maestra de yoga. He tenido muchos altibajos en todos los aspectos de mi vida, con el deporte aprendí que los resultados no dependen sólo de mi sino del balance de mis decisiones y del entorno, ser deportista me enseño que después de una victoria o una derrota lo importante es lo que se hace para mejorar ese resultado, de lo contrario nunca habría un avance.

The discipline has taught me to win and lose, but above all, to recover. One of the most important things that I learned throughout my life as an athlete was discipline. And I have not yet deciphered, and I think I will never do it, if I was born that way or if it was sports that made me a person who fights for its goals, orderly, methodically, and positively. Thanks to my dedication and the discipline that revolves around sports, I have achieved many things. In addition to winning competitions and breaking records, I have a career as a psychologist, I'm about to finish my master's degree in sports psychology, I'm starting my own business, I'm an amateur runner and a yoga teacher. I have had many ups and downs in all aspects of my life, with the sport I learned that the results depend not only on me but on the balance of my decisions and the environment, being an athlete taught me that after a victory or a defeat the important thing is what is done to improve that result, otherwise there would never get better.

El cambio más significativo que tuve gracias al deporte fue haber obtenido una beca en Estados Unidos para estudiar la universidad y competir por UTEP. Ésta transformación me permitió competir al mejor nivel durante 4 años, tener el mejor equipo para entrenar, aprender otro idioma, completar mis estudios, enriquecerme culturalmente, viajar y conocer mucha gente. Durante esos años tuve que poner pausa a mi sueño olímpico, ya que por diferentes situaciones no pude ser parte de la selección nacional. Fue un golpe muy duro, tuve que sacrificar unas cosas por otras pero valió la pena.

The most significant change I had thanks to the sport was earning a scholarship in the United States to study the university and compete for UTEP. This transformation allowed me to compete at the best level for 4 years, have the best team to train, learn another language, complete my studies, enrich myself culturally, travel and meet many people. During those years I had to pause my Olympic dream, because for different situations I could not be part of the national team. It was a very hard blow, I had to sacrifice some things for others but it was worth it.

Muchas veces se juzga a un deportista por ganar o no una competencia, especialmente se critica el desempeño de los deportistas olímpicos porque es el evento más televisado. Sin embargo no se hace público el camino recorrido, ser deportista es un trabajo de 24 horas, de 365 días, que a veces se paga y a veces no. Yo sigo persiguiendo mi sueño olímpico, me he tardado más de lo que hubiera querido, he tenido miles de obstáculos pero nunca me he detenido. Algunos caminos son más rápidos que otros pero si uno toma las pequeñas recompensas y sigue avanzando, el camino no terminará hasta que uno decida tomar otro rumbo.

Many times an athlete is judged for winning or not a competition, especially the performance of Olympic athletes is criticized because it is the most televised event. However, the road traveled is not made public, being an athlete is a 24/7 job, 365 days, which is sometimes paid and sometimes not. I continue to pursue my Olympic dream, I have taken longer than I would have liked, I have had thousands of obstacles, but I have never stopped. Some roads are faster than others, but if one takes the small rewards and keeps moving forward, the road will not end until one decides to take another course.

Andrea me comunicó hace poco su deseo de volverse entrenadora universitaria y creo que no habría mejor coach que mi ex-roommate. Espero que les enseñes a las chicas a desarrollar técnicas y rituales que las ayuden a competir en los más altos niveles. Cuando compartíamos aquel departamento dentro de la universidad, dónde todos los atletas vivíamos, tú me trataste de enseñar a "fluir". Sigo creyendo que esta es la clave de todo, aun que todavía no lo consigo, sigo buscando mi camino. Gracias por enseñarme tanto, tengo el recuerdo de ti como el de una persona muy sólida y consciente. Mucha suerte en todo Andrea y gracias por compartir!!

Andrea communicated to me recently her desire of becoming a collegiate coach, and I think there would be no better coach than my ex-roommate. I hope that you teach the girls to develop techniques and rituals that help them compete at the highest levels. When we shared that apartment at the university, where all the athletes lived, you tried to teach me the art of "flowing" or "awareness". I still believe that this is the key to everything, even though I still haven't gotten it completely, I keep looking and working for my own place in life. Thank you for teaching me so much, I have the memory of you as a very solid and aware person. It was a pleasure sharing a piece of my life with you.
