Soy Verónica Valverde Muñoz originaria de Hermosillo Sonora, México y tengo 29 años. Actualmente vivo en la ciudad de Puebla. Es aquí donde el deporte me abrió las puertas para desarrollarme académicamente y profesionalmente. Desde pequeña supe que tenía habilidades para los deportes. Empecé a practicar basquetbol, cuando tenía 8 años. Recuerdo mucho a mi primer entrenador quien fue una pieza clave para mi formación durante 16 años de carrera como deportista y quien me enseñó lo más importante en mi carrera: la disciplina y la dedicación. Desde muy joven participé en varias competencias contra otras escuelas, municipios, estados y desde entonces obtuve reconocimientos tanto en equipo como individuales. La niñez fue una etapa primordial para mí desarrollo como deportista y me mantenía entusiasmada por lo que estaba logrando en ese momento. Yo aprendí a desde entones a que debía establecerme metas en mi carrera. Al ver mi desempeño, fue mi padre el que apoyó y me enseñó a mantener los pies en la tierra y a ser la mejor en cancha.

I am Veronica Valverde Muñoz, from Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, and I am 29 years old. I currently live in Puebla City, and it is here where athletics opened the doors for me to develop academically and professionaly. Since I was a little girl I was aware of my athletic abilities, I started practicing basketball when I was 8 years old. I remember my first coach very well, he was key for my development as an athlete during 16 years. He taught me the most important thing in my career: discipline and dedication. Since very early on I participated in competitions against other schools, municipalities and states, and I always managed to be awarded for my individual talent and for my team’s performance. Childhood was essential for my development as an athlete, I grew up very excited about what I was doing in that moment, and I learned to set goals at a young stage in my career. Taking note of my performance, it was my father who supported me and taught me to keep my feet on the ground and be better in the court.

Después me ofrecieron una beca para continuar jugando en la secundaria, y entonces con el equipo representativo logramos varios campeonatos municipales y estatales. Participé en estatales de categorías mayores a la mía y también jugaba contra hombres. Creía en mis capacidades y vivía para el basquetbol, el juego era lo mejor que hacía en esos momentos. Era una satisfacción que la gente nos iba a ver jugar por que teníamos un gran equipo. Incluso, en varias ocasiones mis rivales se convirtieron en mis compañeras y amigas. Era tanto mi pasión al deporte que recuerdo que en varias ocasiones jugué lesionada porque mi orgullo era más grande que mi dolor.

Later on I was offered a scholarship to continue my studies in High School where I was part of the varsity team that secured various municipal and state championships. I participated in state tournaments in age divisions greater than mine, and I also played against boys. I believed in my talent and I gave it all for basketball, it was the most important thing I did in that moment. It was a big satisfaction when we had people coming over to watch us, we had a great team. In various occasions mis rivals became my teammates and my friends. My passion for sports was so strong that I remember that I would play even when I was injured.

Una vez estaba en un regional, recuerdo que tenía 15 años, era Sonora vs Baja California; estábamos en medio partido, el nivel era muy parejo, inicia una jugada y me cometen un foul intencional y voy a la banca. En esa ocasión perdimos por 1 punto. Sin embargo, pasamos al nacional y a pesar de las lesiones ese año ganamos la medalla de oro para Sonora, nos seleccionaron para representar a nuestro país entrenamos duro durante meses y estábamos esperando la famosa llamada para ir a la concentración en la ciudad de Guadalajara. Cuando un día nos hablan y nos informan que México no participará en la competencia por falta de recursos económicos. Después de tanto tiempo y dedicación fue una frustración horrible no pude cumplir mi meta.

I remember a game during the regional tournament, I was 15 years old, and we were playing against our border state team of Baja California. It was a bit shocking because we were half way into the game when they intentionally committed a foul on me, and I had to sit down. We lost by one point and it was frustrating. However; we continued on to the national tournament and despite the lessons, we won the gold for our state of Sonora. That year my teammates and I were selected to represent our country. We trained very hard for some months, and we were waiting for the call to go to the final training camp in Guadalajara, Mexico. One day they called us finally, but they informed us that Mexico was not going to be part of the international tournaments because of lack of funds. After so much time and dedication invested on the cause, it was a horrible frustration not being able to reach my goal.

A los 16 años muchas de mis compañeras empezaron a perder el interés al deporte, recuerdo que en veces me tocaba entrenar sola con mi entrenador. Entonces fue inevitable ver la gran realidad de nuestro México, recuerdo que no contábamos con instalaciones adecuadas, compañeras sin tenis para practicar, dificultades económicas para viajar y entrenar, entre muchas cosas más y empecé a tener algunas lesiones desde muy pequeña.

At 16, many of my friends started to lose interest in sports. I remember that sometimes I was the only girl on the team to go to the training sessions with our coach. It was inevitable not to notice the lack of interest that out country has for sports. I remember that we did not have the right facilities, some of my teammates were lacking the right shoes to train with, we definitely faced budget constrains to travel and train among many other things. Plus, I started to have many injures since very early on.

Y no acabaría contando mis historias en las canchas, tengo tantos recuerdos, me entregué en la cancha, juego tras juego, cada competencia fue una historia diferente, en veces ganábamos y veces perdíamos, pero siempre dejaba el corazón en cada juego.

I could not finish telling all the stories I have from the court, I have so many memories! I gave it all in the court, game after game, every competition was a different story, sometimes we won and sometimes we lost, but I always left my heart on the court.

Continúe buscando alternativas que no hubieran sido posible otra vez sin el apoyo de familia, y el creer en uno misma. Participé en una clínica que se llamaba “Score Hoop" en los Ángeles California, impartida por una de las jugadoras de WNBA. Jugué en Los Ángeles representando a una preparatoria durante un verano y estuve en una competencia estatal en San Diego California. Me ofrecieron una beca para preparatoria, pero decidí continuar con mi trayectoria en México.

I continued looking for alternatives that could not have been possible without the support of my family and the belief I had in myself. I went to a camp in the USA named “Score Hoop” that was taught by one WNBA player. I played in LA for a high school one summer, and I competed in a state tournament in San Diego California. They offered me a scholarship to stay in the US at a high school, but I decided to continue my career in Mexico.

Durante en mi último año de preparatoria participé en torneos municipales, estales y nacionales y me ofrecieron becas en tres universidades reconocidas en México. Fue una gran satisfacción que mi esfuerzo en la cancha jugando con pasión y amor al deporte se viera reflejado en ese logro… otra de mis metas se había cumplido. Mis padres no contaban con los recursos económicos para pagar una universidad de ese nivel, sin embargo, el basquetbol me abrió las puertas para el desarrollo profesional y sobre todo forjar mi carácter y ser quien soy hoy.

It was during my last year of high school, when after participating in the usual municipal, state and national tournaments, I got offered a scholarship by 3 highly regarded universities in Mexico. It was an amazing satisfaction to see that my effort of giving all my heart and love to this sport had been noticed, also that was another of my goals being achieved. My parents didn’t have the budget to pay a college of that caliber; however, the game of basketball opened the doors for me, for my professional development and most importantly, helped me forge my character and find my true self.

Estudié la licenciatura en Marketing en la Universidad las Américas Puebla, en la ciudad de Puebla durante 5 años. Logramos un campeonato nacional y subcampeonato. Nunca voy a olvidar aquella jugadora de Baja California que me había cometido aquel foul intencional después de 5 años, se convirtió además de mi amiga en mi compañera de equipo, representamos y jugamos para la misma Universidad.

I studied marketing for 5 years at the Americas University in Puebla. During those years we won a national championship and we were the runner up team in another occasion. I will never forget that girl who had intentionally fouled me when I was 15. After 5 years she had become my teammate and most importantly my friend, and we proudly represented our college, together.

En la etapa de la universidad, la vida me cobró muchas facturas. Tuve varias lesiones y en mi último año tuve una lesión en la rodilla que me hizo decidir terminar con mi carrera como deportista y poner en la balanza salud y mi futuro. Independientemente de que estuve becada durante todos mis estudios, de varios triunfos y campeonatos (que son las mejores sensaciones y satisfacciones para mí y para cualquier deportista) es el basquetbol el mejor aprendizaje que tuve en la vida, siempre lo he dicho, es lo más parecido a la vida real porque te enseña valores tan importantes como:

During college, life was tough on me. I suffered several lessons and on my last year I had a knew injury… it was then when I decided to end my athletic career and go for my health and my future. Aside from getting a full ride to college, and from winning several tournaments and trophies, which are some of the most important achievements for me and many other athletes, the game of basketball was what has actually taught me more. I have always said it, basketball simulates life very well because it teaches you values like:

+Respeto: Respeto a tu cuerpo, a tus compañeras y al oponente

Respect: for your body, for your teammates and for your opponent

+Confianza: En ti y en los demás

Confidence: in you and others

+Trabajo en equipo: Liderazgo, asumir roles y ejecutar tareas.

Team Work: leadership, to be proactive and get things done

+Tenacidad, responsabilidad, disciplina, humildad

Tenacity, responsibility, discipline, humbleness

Te enseña que en la vida a veces se gana y algunas veces se pierde y cuando se pierde a levantar la cabeza con dignidad, aceptar los errores y asumir responsabilidades, y a creer que querer es poder. La vida para un deportista es corta y el tiempo es un limitante, pero son los aprendizajes del deporte los cuales nos marcan para toda la vida y sobre todo lo que nos diferencia de los demás. Hasta hoy no conozco la fórmula para medir el éxito pero por todo el aprendizaje que con lleva es más fácil lograr el éxito y ser una persona más feliz.

The game teaches you that in life sometimes you lose and sometimes you win, and when you lose you have to keep your chin up with dignity, accept your mistakes and take responsibility for your actions. It also teaches you that if you really want something, you can do it. The life of an athlete is very short and time is limited, but the lessons learned through sports really have a long lasting impact, specially because those lessons learned make us different/unique. Up to now, I do not know a formula to measure success, but given all the lessons learned from this game, it has been easier to achieve my goals and be a happier person.

Gracias Vero por compartir tu historia. ¡Esta buenísima! en mi caso me llega mas por que cuentas cosas que estabas viviendo cuando yo estaba en la cancha contigo. Fue genial ser tu compañera de equipo… yo creí que era buena hasta que te conocí a ti! Eras increíble, subías los estándares con ese jump shot que nadie podía hacer mas que tu y obviamente tu inteligencia que lideraba al equipo fue clave para nuestro desempeño. Me da gusto que hables sobre la gran decepción de no haber podido ir a la competencia internacional como equipo por que no nos dio dinero el Estado y como esto pudo haber afectado la ilusión de algunas de nosotras. Yo me cambié de deporte, otras no sé. Ojalá yo pueda ayudar a que esas niñas no se pierdan y que al contrario, lleguen a ser profesionistas exitosas como tu.

Thanks Vero for sharing your story. I love it! It gets to me because part of this story happens when I am playing on the court next to you. It was an honor being your teammate… I thought I was a good player until I met you! You were amazing, you rose the standards, you had that jump shot that nobody else could do, and obviously your leadership and intelligence was key our good performance. I am really glad you talk about the time when we were so disillusioned by not being able to go to the international competition because “of lack of funds”. I remember my training runs, everyday at night having the international competition in mind. I bet this event or lack there of, killed some of our dreams… I changed sports,I am not sure what others they did. I really hope to have the opportunity to save some of that talent that falls through the cracks and give them a hand to become great successful entrepreneurs like you.
