El basquetbol marcó 14 años de mi vida justo en una etapa de formación importante en la que definitivamente la experiencia y aprendizaje adquiridos en ese tiempo, son una buena base del éxito y felicidad que hoy existe en mi vida profesional y personal. Les voy a compartir la historia de una de las enseñanzas más importante que me dejo el basquetbol: ayudar a sacar lo mejor de las personas.

Basketball had a real and direct influence in me for 14 years during an important and formative stage in life where I gathered many experiences and knowledge that have become into a very solid base for the success and happiness that I have in my life today. I will share in the next paragraphs the story of one of the most important lessons learned thought basketball: to help people get the best of out themselves.

Esta lección llegó cuando tenía 15 años, estábamos por iniciar la semifinal del Nacional de CONADEIP en Mty contra un equipo que a todas luces era mejor que el mío. Uno contra uno en talento perdíamos antes de iniciar el juego. Yo estaba muy preocupada porque la responsabilidad del juego iba a caer en otra compañera y en mí, lo cual no iba a ser suficiente para ganar. Ese día decidí tener confianza en el equipo que éramos y “jugar a pasar el balón”. Elegí no ser parte de las jugadas más importantes y que quienes debían anotar serían las demás.

I learned this lesson when I was 15, we were about tot start a semifinal at the CONADEIP Nationals in Monterrey, Mexico, against a team that was clearly better than us. On paper, one on one we would lose even before starting the game. I was very worried because all the responsibility during that game was going to fall on my teammate and me, which was not going to be enough to win the game. However, that day, I decided to have faith in our team and play the strategy of "passing the ball". I chose not to be the most important player and that others were the ones who had to score this time.

Recuerdo platicar con el equipo justo antes de empezar el juego y decirles lo importante que eran cada una de ellas para lograr el objetivo, les recordé que la confianza empezaba con ellas mismas y les dije porque nuestro equipo era más fuerte que el equipo contrario. Al final del fin de semana, ya habíamos ganado la semifinal y ese año quedamos campeonas contra el equipo de casa.

I remember giving the team a pep talk right before the game and telling them how important were each and everyone of them to achieve our goal. I reminded them that the first step was for them to believe in their own abilities, and I told them the reason why our team was better than our rivals. At the end of the weekend, we have won the semifinal and we defeated the home team.

Estoy convencida que el éxito y los mejores resultados se obtienen en equipo. Aprendí a saber identificar las cualidades de cada persona en el equipo y qué el secreto radica en saber integrar estas cualidades y enfocarlas en cumplir un objetivo común. No siempre se tienen los mejores talentos, ni eres la mejor del equipo; sin embargo, es importante conocer tus propias limitaciones y las del resto de la gente para que en conjunto se desvanezcan las deficiencias que como equipo puedan tener.

I am convinced that success and better results are obtained by teams. I learned to identify the qualities of each of the team members and that the secret relies on combining those qualities and focus them into a common goal. We won't always have the best talent, nor we will be the best player on a team so it is important to know your own limitations and the ones from the rest of the team so you can work on canceling them out.

Los equipos pueden llegar a ser tan fuertes como quieran cuando se logra una armonía en donde se combinan talentos, defectos, apoyo, respeto y todos se preocupan por el éxito conjunto y después el crecimiento individual. Hoy tengo un equipo de trabajo, que seguramente no son los más experimentados en el medio, pero siempre que se trata de iniciar un nuevo proyecto o resolver un problema, confío en que el resultado será positivo y será el mejor que podamos tener.

Teams can be as strong as they want to be when they find harmony where talent, weaknesses, support and respect combine, and where they all worry about the joint success before their individual success. Today, I am part of a work team that is probably not made out of the most expert people on the field; however, every time we will start a new project or solve a problem, I trust that we can, as a team, get a positive result and will be the best we can get to.

Aprendí a escuchar, a observar, a analizar a la gente y entendí que no siempre ir adelante del equipo significa estar arriba, si no que significa limpiar el camino para todos crezcan y todos ganemos.

I learned to listen, to observe and to analyze people, and I understood that moving forward does not mean to be on top, but to clear the way for others to grow - that way, we all win.
